Why people share posts.
Nov 14, 2023Psychology may seem like a strange bedfellow for social media, but almost everything we do is driven by the way our brains and minds are created.
There are 5 main reasons that people will choose to share a post on social media.
To bring valuable content to others
These kinds of people genuinely want to share great content with others in their network. If they find value in the content, they will share it.
To define themselves
We all have perceptions of who we are, or who we want to be. The content we share on social media is a powerful indicator of the kind of person we are. These people share because the content says something about themselves - they're healthy, altruistic or intelligent.
To get and stay connected
Social media is and always will be social. Some of us share to keep our bonds strong with others. We do it to connect to our networks and fulfil the desire for community and connection.
For self-fulfilment
These people feel good about themselves, if they are sharing content of value to others. It helps them feel needed and validated.
To support a cause or brand
My favourite group of sharers, these people will share content from a cause or brand simply because they believe in it and want to help that organisation succeed.
If you want to get more shares on social media, I suggest you take a close look at these motives.
Which of these does your content tap into? What do you need to do to ensure your content does connect with this type, or more than one type, of sharer?
Think about things like:
- Giving value
- Taking a clear stand
- Building conversation and community
- Using emotional and connective language
- Connect to purpose
- Tell people you need support
Happy posting everyone!
